What is the AEU?

The Applied Ethnography Unit (AEU) is a contract research arm within the Department of Anthropology at the University of Utah. The AEU combines the expertise of faculty and students to provide research briefs and policy reports on a broad range of topics regarding human culture and behavior, including measuring cultural norms and values, behavioral strategies, and the spread of information. By incorporating rigorous data collection with advanced statistical approaches, we provide insights into the social, cultural, and behavioral dimensions of human life.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance human-centered understanding through rigorous ethnographic research, delivering culturally informed insights that empower organizations in the public and private sectors. By applying anthropological methods and perspectives, we illuminate the social, cultural, and behavioral dimensions of complex challenges --enhancing policy, innovation, and strategic decision-making rooted in real-wrold human experiences.
