Jan 31st Deadline approaching: Tongan Ethnographic Field School Summer 2025
Program description
For three weeks students will conduct ethnographic research and gain experience with a variety of methods, including semi-structured interviews, classification tasks, and observation. The director will guide research activities and review progress documented in a field journal assigned to the student ethnographer. Outreach and service activities will also be conducted as appropriate. Program starts on May 12th and ends on June 2nd, 2025.
Students will earn 3-6 Anthropology 4960/6960 credits. For undergraduates, participation in the program will fulfill the International Requirement (IR).
Eligibility requirements
Minimum age of 18. University of Utah undergraduate or graduate students, students at other colleges or universities, alumni and qualified members of our community are welcome to apply.
Research projects
Specific to summer 2025, there are 3 primary research projects. Contact director for details.
- Variation in botanical knowledge
- Experimental archaeology
- Traditional diving and marine foraging
Program cost
There is a special fee of $1640 that covers lodging, ground and sea transportation, entrance fees, and international health insurance. This fee does not include course tuition, airfare to/from Tonga, passport, personal expenses (souvenirs, for example).
Funding
Undergraduate research grants are available for U students through UROP. The student will need to work with the director starting Jan. 2023 to build a research proposal.
