Financial Aid for Anthropology Undergraduates

Most financial aid is handled through the University's main Financial Aid Office, but there are some scholarships available through the College of Social and Behavioral Science, the Alumni Association, and the Department of Anthropology.

Departmental Scholarships ( Tuition Waiver)
Anthropology Departmental scholarships provide a tuition waiver for 2 semesters, for 12-18 hours each semester (student pays mandatory fees). Applicants must be a Utah resident, a declared Anthropology major, and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Applications for departmental scholarships and tuition waivers will open on January 3, 2017.

Scholarship Name: Ned and Claudia Christensen Scholarship
Available to: A student in Cultural Anthropology.
Selection Criteria: Merit, awarded at the discretion of the selection committee.
Amount of Award: Typically $4,000
Number of Awards: Typically 1.
Donor: Edward R. (Ned) Christensen has achieved wide intellectual accomplishments in a variety of academic and professional fields and is devoted to civic and social service. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1948 with a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Chemistry in 1949.  During his career as a research chemist with Texaco, Inc., Mr. Christensen earned an M.S. in Industrial Administration from Union College.

Scholarship Name: The Giles W. and Elise G. Mead Foundation Endowed Scholarship
Available to: A student majoring in Anthropology.
Selection Criteria: Merit, awarded at the discretion of the selection committee.
Amount of Award: Typically up to $4000.
Number of Awards: Typically one.
Donor: The fund was established by Parry Mead-Murray and the Giles and Elise Mead Foundation in 2004. The Mead Foundation supports organizations dedicated to preserving and improving the environment, the advancement of medical science, and other important social needs. Dr. Giles W. Mead (1928-2003) was a noted ichthyologist.

College Scholarships
The College of Social and Behavioral Science awards several scholarships. The requirements and award amounts vary.

Alumni Association Scholarships
The University of Utah Alumni Association awards a variety of scholarships for current and incoming students.

All other financial aid is handled through the University's Financial Aid Office. The Office of Admissions provides more financial information such as tuition estimates and residency.

Other Sources of Financial Aid and Scholarships
The University and outside organizations also provide scholarships to help with financial aid.
